Description
Anteriorly, the superficial fascia and brachial fascia form a continuous sheath from the deltoid region across the anterior compartment of the arm, investing the biceps brachii and brachialis as they descend to the cubital fossa. Medially, the fascial plane tracks toward the medial intermuscular septum and the medial epicondyle, while laterally it approaches the lateral intermuscular septum and the brachioradialis origin. Deep to the fascia, the humerus sits central in the arm with the radius lateral and ulna medial in the forearm, and the distal biceps tendon courses inferolaterally toward the radial tuberosity with the bicipital aponeurosis fanning medially over the flexor-pronator mass. A clean map of tissue layers. Fascial anatomy in this region matters because it defines surgical planes and dictates how fluid spreads, from traumatic hematoma to necrotizing soft tissue infection. The bicipital aponeurosis and overlying deep fascia also form a protective layer over the brachial artery and median nerve in the cubital fossa, a relationship that becomes clinically relevant during venipuncture, distal biceps tendon rupture evaluation, and anterior approaches to the elbow. Compartment boundaries are not academic here, they guide decompression in acute compartment syndrome of the arm and forearm.
