Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of an adult male thorax, the pectoral fascia forms a thin, fibrous sheath investing pectoralis major on the anterior chest wall, then continuing laterally toward the axilla where it blends with axillary fascia and relates to the anterior axillary fold. Superficial to it lie the subcutaneous tissue and skin, while deep to it the pectoralis major muscle fibers run inferolaterally from the clavicle and sternum toward the humerus, with the serratus anterior and rib cage positioned more posteriorly along the lateral thoracic wall. Superiorly, the deltoid caps the shoulder and meets the pectoral region near the deltopectoral interval; inferiorly, the domed diaphragm is indicated in blue beneath the costal margin. Ribs are visible deep to the muscular layer. A clean fascial plane. This lateral perspective matters because pectoral fascia is the plane surgeons and anatomists use to separate superficial tissues from the pectoralis major during approaches to the breast and anterior axilla, and it defines the surface the pectoral nerves traverse on their way to the muscle. The view also helps clarify how infection, hematoma, or anesthetic spread can track along the pectoral fascial compartment, a practical consideration in pectoral (PECS) blocks and in post-mastectomy seroma formation where fluid collects superficial to muscle. Relationship to the anterior axillary fold is the key landmark. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching to distinguish fascia investing pectoralis major from deeper endothoracic fascia and intercostal layers, or in surgical education modules covering mastectomy, axillary dissection, and implant pocket creation (subglandular versus subpectoral planes).
