Description
Running along the medial aspect of the male forearm, the deep fascia (antebrachial fascia) forms a dense fibrous sleeve superficial to the flexor-pronator muscle mass, with septa extending toward the radius and ulna to partition muscle compartments. Proximally it continues from the brachial fascia near the medial epicondyle of the humerus, and distally it thickens toward the wrist where it blends with the flexor retinaculum over the carpal bones. The radius lies laterally and the ulna medially, and the flexor tendons become more prominent as they course distally toward the carpus and the metacarpals. Clear tendon grouping at the wrist matters. Clinically, this medial perspective is the one you want when teaching the flexor-pronator origin and its relationship to the antebrachial fascia, a common pain generator in medial epicondylitis and a key landmark in approaches to the ulnar side of the forearm. The deep fascia also defines the boundaries that drive compartment syndrome physiology in the forearm, where rising pressure within the volar compartment compromises perfusion to flexor muscles and the median and ulnar nerves. Surgeons often incise along the ulnar border to decompress the volar compartment while minimizing risk to the superficial radial structures.
