Presented on a sectioned adult male cranium, the temporal bone is emphasized along the lateral skull base, with the squamous part forming the lateral cranial wall and the petrous part projecting medially and anteriorly toward the sphenoid. Posterior to the external acoustic meatus, the mastoid process and mastoid air cell region occupy the posteroinferior temporal bone, while the zygomatic process runs anteriorly to contribute to the zygomatic arch. Along the endocranial surface, the petrous ridge separates the middle cranial fossa superiorly from the posterior cranial fossa posteriorly, and the temporoparietal suture line helps orient the relationship to adjacent cranial vault bones. This oblique, partially opened skull view matters because the temporal bone concentrates key foramina and canals in a small space, and surgical corridors often depend on millimeter-level orientation to the petrous apex and mastoid.
