Description
Habenular sulcus runs as a shallow longitudinal groove along the dorsomedial aspect of the diencephalon, separating the habenular trigone of the epithalamus from the adjacent dorsal thalamus near the posterior roof of the third ventricle. Medial to the sulcus lie the habenular nuclei within the habenular region, while laterally the thalamic surface rises toward the pulvinar territory, creating a subtle but teachable change in contour. Superior and posterior to this boundary, the pineal region and the posterior commissure sit in close neighborhood, and the stria medullaris thalami can be appreciated as the principal afferent pathway approaching the habenula along the thalamic surface. A small landmark. It is easy to miss. For neuroanatomy teaching, the sulcus matters because it anchors the epithalamus in space when learners struggle to localize the habenula relative to the thalamus, tectum, and third ventricular roof. Clinically, the habenular complex has renewed relevance in affective circuitry, with lateral habenula targets discussed in deep brain stimulation and lesion studies for refractory depression, and the sulcus helps orient that target region on dorsal diencephalic surfaces.
