Description
Curving along the superior border of the ilium, the iliac crest is presented from a lateral perspective, with the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) leading into the iliac tubercle and the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS) trailing posteriorly toward the sacroiliac region. As the animation progresses, the outer table of the ilium remains lateral while the crest’s thickened lip and subtle undulations become easier to appreciate in profile. Adjacent pelvic-girdle landmarks logically enter the frame for orientation, including the iliac fossa deep to the crest (medial), the acetabular region inferiorly, and the greater sciatic notch posteroinferiorly. Orientation stays true to anatomical position. Surface anatomy and procedural planning often start at the iliac crest. Palpation of the crest and ASIS guides placement for pelvic external fixation pins, iliac crest bone graft harvest, and landmarking for spinal and regional anesthesia, while tenderness along the crest can point to iliac apophysitis in adolescent athletes or avulsion at the ASIS/iliac crest in sprinting injuries. Motion adds clarity here: a static lateral plate can flatten the contour, but a sequential sweep along the crest helps the viewer track how the palpable rim relates to deeper iliac bone and to the superior aspect of the acetabulum. Small shape differences matter. Use this animation in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules covering the bony pelvis, in orthopedic or sports-medicine lectures on pelvic avulsion fractures, or in procedure-focused materials that teach landmark-based palpation and graft harvest orientation.
