Description
Rotating into an inferior perspective, the animation isolates the axis (C2) and brings the inferior articular processes into view on either side of the vertebral arch. Each inferior articular facet sits posterolateral to the vertebral body and dens, angling inferiorly to meet the superior articular facets of C3. As the sequence settles, adjacent landmarks orient the viewer: the pedicles bridge anteriorly to the body, the laminae converge posteriorly toward the bifid spinous process, and the transverse processes extend laterally toward the foramen transversarium. Orientation is unambiguous. These inferior facets define the C2 to C3 zygapophysial joints and, together with the C2 to C3 intervertebral disc, govern coupled motion in the upper cervical spine after rotation is largely handled at the atlanto-axial complex. Facet angulation here matters in trauma and degeneration: hyperextension injuries can produce pars interarticularis fractures of C2 (hangman’s fracture), while osteoarthritic change at the C2 to C3 facet joints contributes to upper neck pain and can narrow the adjacent intervertebral foramen, affecting the C3 spinal nerve. Animated rotation helps learners link the articular surface geometry to likely load paths and fracture lines in a way static orthographic plates rarely convey. Use this clip in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal courses when introducing cervical vertebral regional features, in radiology teaching to correlate with oblique CT reconstructions of the C2 to C3 facets, or in spine surgery education when discussing posterior exposure and screw trajectory planning around the C2 pars and lateral mass. It also suits patient-facing education on whiplash and post-traumatic neck pain when paired with simplified clinical overlays. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
