Description
Centered on C2 (the axis), the animation isolates the pars interarticularis as the short osseous bridge between the superior and inferior articular processes, positioned posterolateral to the vertebral body and just anterior to the lamina and spinous process. As the sequence rotates around the upper cervical spine, the C2 superior articular facets come into view cranially, articulating with the inferior facets of C1, while the inferior articular processes align caudally toward C3. The pars is shown in continuity with the pedicle and laminar arch, clarifying how forces traverse the posterior elements during motion of the neck. Orientation is clear. Clinical relevance is immediate in trauma imaging and posterior cervical fixation planning. Fractures through the C2 pars (classically the “hangman’s fracture,” traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis) often follow hyperextension and axial loading, producing bilateral defects that permit anterior translation of C2 on C3 and can widen the spinal canal relative to odontoid injuries, changing neurologic risk and management. By stepping through angles and depth, the animation makes it easier to distinguish the pars from the pedicle, facet joint, and lamina on oblique CT reconstructions and to anticipate safe screw trajectories in pars or pedicle fixation.
