Description

Rotating into an anterior orientation, the axis (C2 vertebra) is presented with attention on the inferior articular facets as they sit inferior to the superior articular facets and lateral to the vertebral body. The pars interarticularis forms the bony bridge between the superior and inferior articular processes, continuous posteriorly with the lamina on either side of the vertebral arch. As the sequence progresses, the viewer tracks how this pars links the lamina to the articular processes while remaining posterior to the vertebral body and anterior to the spinous process. Small shifts in perspective clarify how the inferior articular facet surfaces face inferolaterally to meet the superior articular facets of C3. Clinically, this is the region scrutinized when evaluating traumatic defects of the C2 pars interarticularis, including the classic hangman’s fracture pattern that can disrupt the C2 to C3 articulation. Orientation matters here. An anterior pass that still preserves the posterior elements helps learners reconcile why a fracture through the pars can destabilize the vertebral arch while leaving the dens and anterior body relationships deceptively intact on limited views. Use this animation in cervical spine anatomy teaching, radiology correlation sessions that bridge plain films and CT reformats, or in publishing figures that explain C2 injury mechanisms and fixation planning around the articular processes and lamina. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
