Description
Cut through in section, the lymph node is organized around an outer cortex and a central medulla, enclosed by a fibrous capsule with a subcapsular sinus immediately deep to it. Lymphoid follicles sit in the superficial cortex, their pale-staining germinal centers oriented toward the capsule, while deeper paracortical tissue lies medial to the follicles and leads into medullary cords separated by medullary sinuses. Afferent lymphatic vessels enter along the convex surface and empty into the subcapsular and trabecular sinuses, and the efferent lymphatic vessel exits at the hilum with the nodal blood vessels. Flow is one-way. That internal routing matters when you are teaching antigen presentation and lymphocyte trafficking, because B-cell proliferation in germinal centers and T-cell activation in the paracortex occur in distinct compartments connected by the sinus system. The arrangement also explains why sentinel lymph node biopsy targets the first draining node in melanoma and breast cancer, and why metastatic deposits often lodge initially in the subcapsular sinus before extending into cortical and medullary regions. Pathology becomes spatial, not abstract. Use this artwork in histology and immunology teaching to map follicles, sinuses, and afferent versus efferent pathways onto the functional concept of lymph filtration, or in surgical oncology materials to support explanations of nodal staging and sampling.
