Description

Posteriorly, the semi-transparent torso reveals the paired lungs flanking the thoracic vertebral column, with the heart projecting slightly left of midline between them. Inferior to the diaphragm, the stomach lies in the left upper quadrant while coils of small intestine occupy the central abdomen, framed by the large intestine with its ascending segment on the right and descending segment on the left. Deep to the posterior abdominal wall, the retroperitoneal kidneys sit bilaterally on either side of the spine, with the abdominal aorta slightly left of the midline and the inferior vena cava to its right. A rear view like this is the one you want when teaching what stays fixed against the posterior abdominal wall as the peritoneal cavity shifts and distends. It maps cleanly onto clinical localization of flank pain and hematuria, where renal or ureteric pathology is considered first, and it supports discussions of posterior approaches to the kidney, including percutaneous nephrostomy tract planning that deliberately traverses posterolateral soft tissues while avoiding major vessels. Surface anatomy matters here, because the kidneys project under the lower ribs and can be injured with blunt posterior trauma. Use this artwork for gross anatomy lab guides and lecture slides on retroperitoneal anatomy, body-cavity organization, and posterior topography of thoracoabdominal viscera, or for patient-facing education in urology and interventional radiology clinics where a posterior access route needs a clear visual. It also reproduces well in textbooks and eLearning modules that compare anterior versus posterior organ relationships in the adult male.
