Description
Oriented to an inferior (basal) view of the adult male brain, the interpeduncular vein is traced within the interpeduncular fossa, running between the right and left cerebral peduncles (crura cerebri) on the ventral aspect of the midbrain. Superior and anterior to this space, the optic nerves (CN II) and optic chiasm sit at the base of the diencephalon, while the olfactory bulbs and tracts lie more rostral on the orbital surface of the frontal lobes. Caudally, the vessel’s relationship to the pons and the emerging rootlets of cranial nerves is readable in the same field, with the cerebellum visible posteriorly and inferiorly. Venous anatomy at the brain base is easy to underteach because arteries dominate most basal diagrams, yet interpeduncular venous channels matter when you are mapping perimesencephalic drainage patterns or explaining why certain subarachnoid hemorrhage distributions remain localized around the midbrain. This perspective also helps learners orient the interpeduncular cistern relative to the cerebral peduncles and nearby cranial nerve exits, a practical setup for discussions of basilar apex pathology and endoscopic endonasal or transcranial approaches that work in the corridor around the sella and ventral midbrain.
