Description
Seen from the inferior aspect of the male brain, the sphenoparietal sinus is traced as a short venous channel running along the posterior margin of the lesser wing of the sphenoid (sphenoid ridge), anterolateral to the temporal lobe and just lateral to the optic nerve at the optic chiasm region. It courses posteriorly and medially toward the cavernous sinus, where it drains into the dural venous sinus system adjacent to the sella turcica. Posteriorly, the transverse sinuses frame the tentorial margins, while cranial nerves emerge from the ventral brainstem and pass anteriorly toward the orbital apex and petroclival region. Small but specific. This angle matters because the sphenoparietal sinus is a frequent point of confusion in skull base anatomy: its size and even presence vary, yet when present it provides a venous route from the superficial middle cerebral vein toward the cavernous sinus. For surgeons working around the anterior clinoid process, optic strut, and parasellar dura, that venous channel can become a source of troublesome bleeding during extradural clinoidectomy or cavernous sinus exposure. The same corridor underpins clinical patterns of cavernous sinus thrombosis, where venous connections, cranial nerves III, IV, V1, V2, and VI, and the internal carotid artery share tight confines.
