Arising from the venous plexus on the inferior aspect of the thyroid gland, the inferior thyroid vein descends in the anterior neck, coursing inferiorly toward the thoracic inlet to drain into the brachiocephalic vein. Anteriorly, the paired thyroid lobes and isthmus sit directly in front of the cervical trachea, whose cartilaginous rings remain visible as the airway continues into the upper mediastinum. Lateral to the gland, the carotid arteries and internal jugular veins frame the central visceral compartment, while the clavicles and superior ribs define the bony boundary of the root of the neck.
