Description

Running along the anterolateral surface of the tibia, the anterior tibial vein is shown as a paired set of venae comitantes flanking the anterior tibial artery, deep to the anterior compartment musculature and anterior to the interosseous membrane. Proximally, the vessel pair ascends from the dorsum of the foot and anterior ankle region toward the popliteal fossa, where it contributes to the popliteal vein after passing superior to the ankle mortise and through the proximal leg. Medially, the tibial shaft dominates the leg silhouette, while the fibula lies lateral and slightly posterior, providing a clear bony reference for the course of the deep neurovascular bundle. Superficial drainage is also suggested by the great saphenous vein tracking along the medial leg. An anterior perspective clarifies how tightly the anterior tibial vein adheres to the anterior tibial artery and the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve within the anterior compartment, a relationship that matters when approaching the artery for bypass targets, embolectomy, or endovascular access planning below the knee.
