Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is opened to trace the conducting airway from the trachea (windpipe) into the main bronchi and onward through a lobar bronchus to a segmental bronchus, with an intrasegmental bronchus highlighted as it courses distally within a bronchopulmonary segment. The airway branches run inferiorly and laterally away from the carina, tapering in caliber as cartilage support becomes less conspicuous and the tube tracks deeper into lung parenchyma. Surrounding lung tissue frames the bronchial tree, emphasizing that intrasegmental pathways remain contained within segmental boundaries rather than crossing intersegmental planes. Branching dominates the field. Segmental and intrasegmental bronchi matter because they map directly onto bronchopulmonary segment anatomy, the unit used for segmentectomy and for describing endobronchial disease distribution. Mucus plugging, aspiration, and postobstructive pneumonia follow these branching patterns, and bronchoscopy reports often localize tumors or bleeding to a specific segmental bronchus before intervention. An anterior perspective also mirrors how many learners first conceptualize the bronchial tree in relation to the midline trachea and the diverging right and left bronchial tubes. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and respiratory blocks, thoracic surgery teaching files (segmentectomy planning and margins), pulmonology and bronchoscopy guides that explain segmental navigation, or as a figure in textbooks and patient education materials describing airway branching into the lung.
