Description
Running anteroinferiorly from the lumbar plexus toward the anterior superior iliac spine, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh) is shown in lateral profile as it crosses the iliac region and approaches the inguinal ligament. Its course is depicted superficial to the ilium and then toward the proximal anterolateral thigh, where it becomes a purely sensory nerve to the skin of the lateral thigh. Adjacent bony landmarks include the ilium, acetabulum, and proximal femur, with the patella and distal femur providing orientation down the limb. Blue vascular structures track nearby in the femoral region. A lateral perspective clarifies the nerve’s relationship to the anterior superior iliac spine and inguinal ligament, the anatomic bottleneck where meralgia paresthetica most often arises from entrapment or stretch. Small positional differences matter. Tight belts, tool belts, pregnancy, obesity, or prone positioning can compress the nerve as it passes under, through, or occasionally over the inguinal ligament, producing burning dysesthesia over the anterolateral thigh without motor weakness. For surgeons, this topography also frames the risk zone during anterior approaches to the hip, iliac crest bone graft harvest, and trocar placement near the iliac fossa. Use this illustration to teach surface anatomy and lumbar plexus derivatives in gross anatomy and regional anesthesia curricula, or to anchor a clinical vignette on lateral thigh sensory loss in neurology and orthopedics texts.
