Description
Spanning the lower posterior thorax and lumbar region, the latissimus dorsi is presented bilaterally as a broad sheet arising from the thoracolumbar fascia and iliac crest and sweeping superolaterally toward the posterior axillary fold. Superiorly it lies inferior to the trapezius and posterior to the inferior angle of the scapula, while medially its fibers approach the spinous processes across the midline fascia and laterally converge toward the proximal humerus (intertubercular sulcus insertion implied by the muscle’s trajectory). Erector spinae columns flank the vertebral line, and the surrounding posterior musculature, including posterior deltoid, triceps brachii, gluteus maximus, hamstring group, and gastrocnemius and soleus, provides full-body context in anatomical position. Fiber direction is easy to read. Posterior exposure of latissimus dorsi matters when teaching the posterior axillary fold and the layered relationship between superficial back muscles and the thoracolumbar fascia, a major load-transferring aponeurosis that links trunk and hip mechanics.
