Description

Seen through a partially transparent cheek in left lateral view, the levator labii superioris runs from the infraorbital margin of the maxilla to the upper lip, descending inferiorly just lateral to the nose and medial to the zygomaticus minor. Superiorly, orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure, while the temporalis fans over the temporal fossa and converges deep to the zygomatic arch. Posterior and inferior to the midface mimetic muscles, the masseter occupies the lateral ramus and angle of the mandible. Fiber direction is clear. Functionally, levator labii superioris elevates and everts the upper lip and contributes to the deepening of the nasolabial sulcus, so this is the view you want when teaching how midface muscle vectors shape expression rather than mastication. Its origin near the infraorbital foramen also makes this region clinically busy: infraorbital nerve blocks for upper lip and anterior cheek anesthesia must traverse the same soft tissue plane, and blunt trauma or surgical dissection can produce sensory disturbance while altering upper lip elevation. Small muscle, visible consequences. Educators can drop this plate directly into head and neck anatomy, dental anesthesia, or facial expression teaching modules where students often confuse levator labii superioris with the zygomaticus group and levator labii superioris alaeque nasi. It also supports ENT, maxillofacial, and aesthetic surgery materials that discuss incisions and dissection planes in the infraorbital and nasolabial region. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
