Description
Layered just deep to the dermis, the levator labii superioris is presented in anterior view on a male face, running inferiorly from the infraorbital margin of the maxilla toward the upper lip. Medial to it lie the nasal components of the upper-lip elevators, while laterally it approaches the zygomaticus minor and the broader zygomaticus major as these muscles converge toward the modiolus at the oral commissure. Superiorly, the orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure and the frontalis occupies the forehead, framing the midface musculature. Fiber direction is clear. This specific exposure matters because the levator labii superioris sits directly over the infraorbital foramen region, where the infraorbital nerve emerges and becomes vulnerable during midface dissection, filler injection, or repair of orbital floor and zygomaticomaxillary fractures. Elevation of the upper lip and deepening of the nasolabial fold depend on coordinated activity between levator labii superioris, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, and zygomaticus minor, so isolating their boundaries helps explain asymmetric smile patterns after trauma or iatrogenic nerve injury.
