Description
Running in the anterior midline of the abdominal wall, the linea alba appears as a narrow tendinous raphe formed by interlacing aponeuroses of the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles. From a lateral male profile, its superficial projection can be oriented from the xiphoid process and costal margin superiorly down to the pubic symphysis and pubic crest inferiorly, sitting anterior to the vertebral column and medial to the lateral abdominal musculature. The thoracic cage, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, pelvis, acetabulum, and proximal femur provide bony landmarks that help you localize the abdominal midline relative to the trunk and hip. This side view matters because it clarifies how the abdominal wall’s midline tendon relates to posture and to surgical corridors. Midline laparotomy and many umbilical hernia repairs intentionally split the linea alba to minimize muscle transection, but the same relative avascularity and collagen alignment also influence wound strength and risk of incisional hernia, particularly below the umbilicus where the linea alba can be narrower.
