Description

Positioned over the lateral shoulder of an adult female in posterior anatomical view, the deltoid is highlighted to clarify its relationship to the shoulder girdle and proximal humerus. From this angle, the acromial (middle) fibers form the superficial shoulder cap, lying lateral to the spine of the scapula and superior to the long head region of the triceps brachii. The posterior (spinal) fibers sweep inferolaterally from the scapular spine toward the deltoid tuberosity, blending anteriorly with the clavicular portion around the humeral head. Posterior deltoid anatomy matters when teaching shoulder mechanics and when planning injections or surgical approaches that use the deltoid as a surface landmark. The acromion and scapular spine define the safe corridor for a deltoid intramuscular injection, typically placed in the mid-deltoid about 2 to 3 fingerbreadths inferior to the acromion to reduce risk to the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral vessels as they traverse the quadrangular space deep to the muscle. Clinically, weakness or atrophy in the posterior deltoid contour can also support suspicion of axillary neuropathy after shoulder dislocation or proximal humeral fracture. Educators will find this posterior, whole-body muscular context useful for anatomy and kinesiology coursework when contrasting deltoid fiber directions with trapezius, latissimus dorsi, and the scapular stabilizers during abduction and external rotation. Publishers can pair it with sports medicine or rehabilitation content on rotator cuff versus deltoid dominance, or with vaccination guidance where surface anatomy needs to be unambiguous.
