Description
Anterior pediatric thorax is rendered with a semi-transparent overlay, allowing the trachea to be followed inferiorly from the cervical midline into the superior mediastinum where it bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi. The right lung occupies the right hemithorax and is partitioned into superior, middle, and inferior lobes by the horizontal and oblique fissures, while the left lung lies to the left of midline with superior and inferior lobes separated by an oblique fissure to accommodate the cardiac impression. Inferiorly, both lungs taper toward their bases where the diaphragmatic domes form the inferior boundary of the pleural cavities. Pediatric respiratory anatomy is not just a scaled-down adult arrangement, and this front-facing presentation helps you orient airway caliber and lobar distribution in a child, where small changes in airway diameter have outsized effects on resistance. The branching at the main bronchi is a practical teaching point for aspiration: the right main bronchus is typically shorter, wider, and more vertical, predisposing to foreign-body lodging in the right bronchial tree and, by extension, the right lower lobe bronchi in many cases. Clear lobar delineation also supports bedside correlation with auscultation and percussion zones during evaluation of pediatric pneumonia or atelectasis.
