Description
Positioned on the lateral face beneath a reflected skin layer, the masseter forms a thick, quadrangular muscle belly spanning from the zygomatic arch superiorly to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and angle inferiorly. Its superficial fibers run inferoposteriorly, while deeper fibers course more vertically toward the ramus, creating the layered texture typical of a powerful elevator of the mandible. Just posterior to the muscle, the auricle overlies the temporal bone and the region of the temporomandibular joint, and anterior facial musculature around the oral commissure sits more superficially and medially. Masseter anatomy matters in day to day clinical practice because its bulk and attachment at the mandibular angle shape both function and pathology: hypertrophy in bruxism, myofascial trigger points that mimic odontogenic pain, and postoperative trismus after dental extraction or mandibular fixation. Surgeons also use the inferior border of the zygomatic arch and the posterior margin of the mandibular ramus as reliable landmarks when planning a preauricular or submandibular approach to the TMJ and ramus, where careful dissection helps avoid branches of the facial nerve traversing the parotid region. Palpation guidance is straightforward. Ask the patient to clench. Use this lateral, subcutaneous view in head and neck anatomy teaching to link surface anatomy to the masticatory apparatus, or in oral and maxillofacial surgery materials explaining mandibular angle fractures, masseteric pain syndromes, or botulinum toxin injection planning for masseter hypertrophy.
