Description

Positioned on the lateral face, the masseter forms a thick muscular sling from the zygomatic arch to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and angle. Superficial fibers descend posteroinferiorly from the zygomatic process of the maxilla and anterior two thirds of the zygomatic arch, while the deep head runs more vertically from the posterior zygomatic arch to the superior ramus, approaching the coronoid region. Anteriorly it lies just posterior to the buccal region, and posteriorly it approaches the parotid bed and the posterior border of the ramus. Lateral exposure of the masseter matters because it is the most accessible elevator of the mandible in physical examination and in surgical corridors along the mandibular angle. Palpation during clenching helps distinguish muscular hypertrophy and myofascial trigger points from parotid or odontogenic pain, a common source of temporomandibular disorder symptoms. The same surface anatomy guides placement of botulinum toxin injections for masseter hypertrophy and bruxism, and it defines the dissection plane for approaches to mandibular angle fractures where the facial nerve’s marginal mandibular branch and the parotid duct are at risk.
