Description

Prominent on the lateral face, the masseter is presented in anterior view as a thick, quadrilateral muscle spanning from the zygomatic arch superiorly to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and angle inferiorly. Its anterior border lies just posterior to the buccal region, while the posterior margin approaches the parotidomasseteric area near the mandibular angle. Medially, the muscle relates to the mandibular ramus and the course of the mandibular canal, while laterally it defines the contour of the cheek overlying the body of the mandible. The mandibular body and angle frame the muscle as a key landmark of the jaw. Masseter anatomy matters because its superficial and deep parts drive jaw elevation and contribute to protrusion, and their orientation explains the palpable clench pattern on exam. Bruxism and temporomandibular disorder frequently produce myofascial pain and hypertrophy in this muscle, sometimes mimicking parotid or dental pathology when swelling localizes near the mandibular angle. Injection planning for botulinum toxin in masseter hypertrophy relies on clear surface relationships to the mandibular ramus and avoidance of diffusion toward the risorius and zygomaticus muscles, which can alter the smile. Surface anatomy with consequences. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy courses, dental and orthodontic teaching modules on muscles of mastication, and clinical communications around TMD, bruxism, or masseter reduction procedures. It also fits operative and procedural education addressing extraoral approaches along the mandibular angle and parotid region. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
