Description
Running vertically along the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, the deep masseter occupies the interval between the zygomatic arch superiorly and the angle of the mandible inferiorly, its fibers oriented more steeply than the superficial layer. The lateral view also exposes the bony landmarks the muscle relates to, including the maxilla with dentition anteriorly, the zygomatic bone and temporal bone superior-posteriorly, and the body and ramus of the mandible with the coronoid process and condylar region posteriorly. Posterior to the facial skeleton, the upper cervical spine is rendered in profile with intervertebral discs, placing the masticatory apparatus in context with head and neck posture. Deep masseter anatomy matters when you are teaching or planning around mandibular elevation mechanics and temporomandibular joint loading. Bruxism and masseter hypertrophy often present as a prominent mandibular angle and facial pain, and botulinum toxin injection protocols rely on understanding the muscle’s depth relative to the parotid region and the course of the masseteric nerve and vessels across the mandibular notch to the deep surface. Fiber direction also informs why the masseter contributes not only to elevation but to controlled protrusion and stabilization during unilateral chewing.
