Description
Arising in the dura mater along the inner table of the lateral cranial wall, the middle meningeal vein tracks posteriorly and superiorly in close parallel with the middle meningeal artery, its smaller venules converging along the vascular grooves of the temporal and parietal bones. Laterally, the cerebral hemisphere fills the cranial cavity with gyri and sulci visible, while the brainstem continues inferiorly into the spinal cord. Cranial nerves emerge from the ventral brainstem and course anterolaterally, and the meningeal venous channels remain extracerebral, separated from the cortical veins by the dural boundary. Color coding distinguishes venous (blue), arterial (red), and neural (yellow) structures for rapid orientation. Clinically, the middle meningeal vein matters because its dural course places it at risk in lateral skull fractures at the pterion, where injury can contribute to an epidural hematoma alongside, or less commonly independent of, middle meningeal arterial bleeding. Venous bleeding tends to evolve more slowly, so correlating a lateral meningeal vessel track with fracture lines on CT can change urgency and monitoring, and it also frames the anatomy relevant to dural-based lesions that recruit meningeal vessels. A key landmark. Use this lateral view when teaching meningeal vascular anatomy in neuroanatomy and head and neck courses, or when illustrating the relationship between the meningeal vessels, cranial vault, and intracranial contents in textbooks, grand rounds slides, and patient-facing education about epidural hemorrhage.
