Description
Arising from the maxillary artery in the infratemporal fossa, the middle meningeal artery enters the cranial cavity via the foramen spinosum and runs laterally deep to the cranial vault, where its main trunk ascends toward the pterion before dividing into frontal (anterior) and parietal (posterior) branches. From a lateral perspective, the vessel tracks on the endocranial surface of the squamous temporal bone and the greater wing of the sphenoid, closely related to the dura mater rather than the cortical surface. Portions of the lateral cerebral hemisphere, superficial venous channels, and adjacent cranial nerves at the skull base may be visible as context for the arterial course. Small branches follow the dural reflections. Neurosurgeons and emergency clinicians care about this artery because the pterion is a thin bony junction where trauma can lacerate the middle meningeal artery and produce an epidural hematoma with rapid mass effect. Burr hole placement for suspected epidural bleeding often targets the temporal region just superior to the zygomatic arch, approximating the artery’s course before it arborizes. For teaching, the view clarifies the distinction between dural vascular supply (middle meningeal artery) and pial arterial supply (middle cerebral artery branches on the brain surface).
