Description
Cut through in cross-section, a peripheral nerve appears as multiple fascicles of axons grouped within a single epineurial envelope, with each fascicle circumscribed by perineurium and partitioned internally by endoneurium. Nearby, a tooth section provides the clinical context: enamel caps the crown, dentin forms the bulk of the tooth, and the pulp chamber and root canals contain neurovascular bundles that converge apically at the apical foramen. Inferior to the root apex, small arteries, veins, and sensory nerve fibers course toward the pulp in a tight, longitudinal arrangement. Color separation clarifies the sheath layers and the dental hard tissues. Fascicular anatomy matters when you are trying to explain why nerves behave the way they do under compression, traction, or local anesthetic spread, and why partial injuries can spare some modalities while abolishing others. In dental anatomy, the same concept helps frame pulpal pain and anesthesia: sensory fibers enter through the apical foramen, branch coronally beneath the odontoblast layer (Raschkow plexus), and can generate disproportionate pain in acute pulpitis.
