Description

The iliocostalis cervicis occupies the posterolateral neck as the cervical continuation of the iliocostalis column of the erector spinae, lying lateral to the spinous processes and medial to the scapular border, and coursing superiorly from the upper ribs toward the transverse processes of the mid cervical vertebrae (classically C4 to C6). Deep to the occipital region and adjacent to the cervical vertebral arches, its fiber direction contrasts with more medial longissimus cervicis, while the scapulae frame the lower field laterally.
