Description
Running along the anterolateral mandible, the depressor labii inferioris (quadratus labii inferioris) is shown as a thin, rectangular slip arising from the oblique line of the mandible and passing superiorly to blend with the orbicularis oris and the lower lip. Lateral to it sit the depressor anguli oris and the modiolus region at the mouth corner, while the mentalis lies more medial and deep, anchoring into the skin of the chin. Posteriorly, the masseter occupies the ramus of the mandible, with the zygomatic arch superior to its origin; the dentition and maxilla provide bony context anteriorly, and the auricle with the external acoustic meatus marks the posterior facial boundary. Clinically, this muscle matters because isolated weakness produces a characteristic inability to evert and depress the lower lip on the affected side, a pattern often seen when the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve is stretched or transected during submandibular gland surgery, neck dissection, or lower face rhytidectomy. Its close relationship to the facial artery and vein as they cross the mandibular body, and to the mandibular border itself, makes this lateral, subcutaneous presentation a practical map for incisions, flap elevation, and targeted chemodenervation for lower lip asymmetry. Subtle, but obvious in motion. Plastic and reconstructive surgeons can use this plate when planning lower face approaches that risk the marginal mandibular nerve, and dental and oral and maxillofacial teams will find it useful for correlating chin and lower lip mechanics with mandibular anatomy in operative notes and patient education. It also fits cleanly into head and neck anatomy teaching for facial expression muscles, pairing well with modules on facial nerve branches and perioral landmarks.
