Description
Arising from the inferior surface of the diaphragm, the inferior phrenic vein is traced from an anterior abdominal perspective as it collects venules along the muscular slips and central tendon near the diaphragmatic periphery. Tributaries converge and course superiorly along the crura, remaining closely related to the diaphragmatic undersurface and the bare area region of the liver on the right. A short, decisive vessel. Inferiorly and anteriorly, the stomach, liver, gallbladder, and the intestinal loops provide visceral landmarks that help orient the vein’s position at the superior margin of the abdominal cavity. Appreciating the inferior phrenic venous drainage matters because it sits at the crossroads of diaphragmatic, hepatic, and adrenal venous pathways, and its terminations are variable, most often to the inferior vena cava on the right and to the left renal vein (or occasionally the left suprarenal vein) on the left. That variability becomes practical during retroperitoneal dissection and upper abdominal surgery, where unexpected inferior phrenic veins can be a source of brisk bleeding near the diaphragmatic hiatuses. It also provides a teaching anchor for portosystemic and systemic venous communications around the superior abdomen, including collateral channels that may enlarge in portal hypertension. Faculty will find this plate useful for gross anatomy and abdominal surgery teaching when discussing diaphragmatic attachments, the suprarenal region, and venous return to the inferior vena cava and renal veins, and for medical publishing figures that need a clean anterior map of upper abdominal venous anatomy. It also supports radiology correlation in CT angiography or contrast-enhanced CT of the upper abdomen, where inferior phrenic vessels can be followed near the diaphragm and mistaken for other small caliber vascular structures.
