Description
Along the left lateral neck and superior shoulder girdle, the levator scapulae runs obliquely from the posterior cervical region to the scapula, with its muscle belly positioned deep and posterior to the sternocleidomastoid and anterior to the trapezius at the medial border of the shoulder. Superiorly, slips arise from the transverse processes of C1 to C4, descending inferolaterally toward the superior angle and upper medial border of the scapula, adjacent to the cervical vertebrae and just medial to the scapulothoracic articulation. Bony landmarks include the mastoid region of the temporal bone, clavicle, cervical spine, ribs, and scapula, with the sternocleidomastoid highlighted as a superficial reference that frames the posterior triangle. Orientation is clear. Because levator scapulae couples cervical side-bending with ipsilateral scapular elevation and downward rotation, this view is a practical way to teach how cervical posture and scapular position interact in cervicogenic headache, chronic neck pain, and the common trigger point pattern felt along the superomedial scapular border. Clinicians often palpate it at the superior angle where the muscle inserts, and that insertion becomes a key landmark during evaluation of scapular dyskinesis and postural syndromes. Its segmental innervation (C3 to C4 contributions with the dorsal scapular nerve, C5) also makes it relevant when differentiating radicular pain from local myofascial tenderness, and when discussing traction injuries in the lateral neck that can irritate the dorsal scapular nerve. Ideal placement includes gross anatomy labs covering the cervical region and shoulder, physiotherapy and sports medicine modules on scapulothoracic mechanics, and clinical texts describing posterior triangle anatomy for lymph node biopsy, central line complications, or neck dissection planning.
