Description
Anterior thoracic viscera appear through a semi-transparent male torso, with the trachea descending in the midline to the carina and bifurcating into the right and left main bronchi. Right lung lobes (superior, middle, and inferior) are separated by the horizontal and oblique fissures, while the left lung shows superior and inferior lobes divided by the oblique fissure; the left cardiac notch contours the anteromedial margin adjacent to the heart. Bronchial branching is traced distally into bronchioles and alveolar regions within the parenchyma, with the heart seated in the middle mediastinum between the lungs, anterior to the esophagus and superior to the stomach. Orientation like this matters when you teach or plan around airway anatomy and mediastinal relationships. Endotracheal tube depth, right main bronchus intubation, and atelectasis patterns make more sense when the right lung’s three-lobe configuration and fissure planes are clear, and when the carina is placed relative to the sternum and vertebral column. It also frames common surgical and procedural corridors, from bronchoscopy navigation into lobar bronchi to the way a pericardial effusion can compress adjacent lung parenchyma and alter ventilation.
