Description
Posterior thoracic anatomy is presented with the skin rendered semi-transparent, allowing the paired lungs to be seen in situ on either side of the mediastinum. The right lung is divided by the horizontal and oblique fissures into superior, middle, and inferior lobes, while the left lung shows a single oblique fissure separating superior and inferior lobes and a medial cardiac impression. Central bronchi enter at the hila on the medial aspects of each lung, then course inferiorly and laterally within the parenchyma toward the distal bronchioles and alveolar regions. Portions of the abdominal viscera appear inferior to the diaphragm, giving a clear sense of thoracic versus abdominal compartmentalization. A posterior perspective clarifies how the oblique fissures descend from a higher posterior origin toward a more anterior inferior termination, a relationship that can confuse learners when only anterior views are available. This orientation also matches common clinical workflows, including posterior auscultation fields and posterolateral thoracotomy or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) approaches where lobar anatomy and fissure completeness affect access to segmental bronchi and pulmonary vessels. In an elderly male, mild hyperinflation or age-related parenchymal change is often discussed alongside distal airway and alveolar anatomy when teaching chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patterns.
