Description
Posterior anatomy of the upper abdomen is rendered with the pancreas highlighted in situ in an elderly Black male. The pancreatic head sits to the right of the midline, cradled by the C-shaped curve of the duodenum, while the neck crosses anterior to the formation of the portal vein and the body extends leftward toward the splenic hilum, with the tail approaching the splenic vessels. Semi-transparent posterior trunk tissues allow the gland’s retroperitoneal position to read clearly against the faintly indicated intestines. Islets of Langerhans are implied within the pancreatic parenchyma. Posterior views matter because they match how the pancreas is encountered on cross-sectional imaging and in operative anatomy, where its deep, retroperitoneal location and relationship to the duodenum drive both symptom patterns and access. Pancreatic head carcinoma often presents with painless jaundice by compressing the distal common bile duct as it courses through the head, a relationship that becomes easier to teach when the head and duodenal sweep are shown as a single unit. Age-related changes, including fatty infiltration and ductal ectasia, can alter gland contour and can be discussed directly against this anatomic backdrop. Deep and fixed.
