Description
Centered in the upper abdomen, the pancreas is rendered from a posterior perspective, with the head nestled in the C loop of the duodenum and the uncinate process projecting inferomedially behind the superior mesenteric vessels. The neck crosses anterior to the portal vein confluence, while the elongated body runs obliquely leftward, tapering into the tail as it approaches the splenic hilum along the splenic vessels. A semi-transparent posterior body wall allows adjacent landmarks to read clearly, including the posterior stomach bed and the proximal jejunum inferior to the transverse mesocolon. Orientation is explicit. Posterior anatomy matters here because pancreatic relationships are defined as much by what lies behind it as by the gland itself. Surgeons rely on these planes during a pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple) when dissecting the uncinate process off the superior mesenteric artery and vein, and radiologists interpret retroperitoneal stranding or fluid tracking in acute pancreatitis against this same backdrop. The view also supports teaching of endocrine and exocrine microanatomy (islets of Langerhans versus acini) by anchoring function to regional anatomy, including why a tail lesion can threaten the splenic vessels and why head enlargement can compress the distal common bile duct within the hepatopancreatic ampulla region.
