Along the inner table of the skull, the dura mater forms the outer meningeal boundary, separating the brain and meninges from the cranial bones. Relationship is the story here: pia adherent to cortex, arachnoid spanning, dura lining. That pial adherence matters when you teach or plan around paths that track the subarachnoid space rather than the brain surface itself. Subarachnoid hemorrhage distributes blood along sulci and cisterns under the arachnoid, while the pia remains the membrane that stays plastered to the cortex, a distinction that helps explain why cortical vessels appear to run on the brain and then disappear into sulcal depths.
