Seen in cut section within a partially transparent calvaria, the cerebral hemispheres fill the cranial cavity with the pia mater closely investing the cerebral cortex, following the crowns of the gyri and dipping deep into the sulci. Superficial to the pia, the arachnoid mater bridges across sulcal spaces, defining the subarachnoid space between the two layers. Along the inner table of the skull, the dura mater forms the outer meningeal boundary, separating the brain and meninges from the cranial bones. Relationship is the story here: pia adherent to cortex, arachnoid spanning, dura lining. That pial adherence matters when you teach or plan around paths that track the subarachnoid space rather than the brain surface itself. Subarachnoid hemorrhage distributes blood along sulci and cisterns under the arachnoid, while the pia remains the membrane that stays plastered to the cortex, a distinction that helps explain why cortical vessels appear to run on the brain and then disappear into sulcal depths. It also frames why leptomeningeal (pia-arachnoid) enhancement on contrast MRI points toward meningitis or carcinomatous meningitis, not a primary parenchymal process.
