Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is presented with the sternum in the midline, from the manubrium superiorly through the sternal body to the xiphoid process inferiorly, with the costal cartilages and anterior ribs curving laterally to form the thoracic cage. Overlying the bony framework, the pectoralis major spans from the clavicle and sternum toward the proximal humerus, while the deltoid caps the lateral shoulder. Along the lateral thoracic wall, serratus anterior digitations arise from the ribs and course posteriorly toward the medial border of the scapula. Superficial neck musculature appears superior to the thoracic inlet. Emphasizing the manubrium and xiphoid process makes this plate practical for teaching palpable surface landmarks and their relationship to deeper thoracic structures. The sternal angle at the manubriosternal junction corresponds to the level of the second costal cartilage, a standard starting point for rib counting during physical examination, chest tube planning, and interpretation of trauma patterns such as sternal fractures. Inferiorly, the xiphoid process matters in CPR and subxiphoid approaches, where excessive caudal pressure can injure the liver or fracture the xiphoid. Landmarks matter. Suitable applications include undergraduate gross anatomy and surface anatomy modules on the thorax, clinical skills teaching on rib identification and anterior chest wall palpation, and publication figures discussing thoracic cage morphology and sex based or population associated variation in sternal form. The combination of skeletal landmarks with major anterior chest muscles also supports surgical education on incisions for median sternotomy and pectoral flap planning.
