Loose collagen bundles and elastic fibers are the dominant components, with small-caliber vessels and autonomic nerve twigs typically coursing within this fibrous fascia-like layer. In a segmental context, the relationship remains consistent from duodenum through jejunum and ileum, even though peritoneal investment differs, the subserosa still defines the interface between serosa and muscularis where present.
