Description
Seen in lateral profile, two adjacent lumbar vertebrae are rendered with their vertebral bodies stacked superior to inferior and separated by an intervertebral disc. The superior articular surface of the inferior vertebra (facet) is emphasized in blue at the pars interarticularis, positioned posterior to the vertebral body and medial to the transverse process, where it meets the inferior articular process of the vertebra above. Posterior elements including the spinous processes project dorsally, while the transverse processes extend laterally, framing the facet joint complex. Facet orientation in the lumbar spine, with superior articular facets generally facing posteromedially, governs flexion and extension while limiting axial rotation, so a clear read on the superior articular surface is central when teaching segmental kinematics. Clinically, this region is a common pain generator in lumbar facet arthropathy and synovial cyst formation, and the pars immediately adjacent to the facet is the site of spondylolysis that can precede isthmic spondylolisthesis.
