Description
Running inferiorly from the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), the cervical vertebral column is shown through C7 with the cervicothoracic junction at T1, where the long spinous processes begin to overlap and the vertebral bodies increase in size. The T1 vertebra sits inferior to C7 and superior to T2, its body and pedicles forming the anterior and lateral boundaries of the vertebral foramen while the laminae converge posteriorly toward the spinous process. Intervertebral discs occupy the spaces between adjacent vertebral bodies, separating C2 through T1 and maintaining the cervical lordosis before the thoracic kyphosis starts. Posterior elements, including the spinous processes and articular processes, align to create the zygapophysial (facet) joints that guide motion segment by segment. T1 matters because it is the first thoracic vertebra to carry a costal facet for the first rib, a key distinction from C7 when you are teaching regional anatomy or interpreting imaging at the thoracic inlet. This level is also a common reference point in trauma and degenerative disease: C7 to T1 is where cervicothoracic facet orientation changes, and disc herniation or foraminal stenosis can affect the C8 nerve root as it exits between C7 and T1. A hard junction.
