Description
Centred on the eleventh thoracic vertebra (T11) in an adult male, the illustration presents the vertebral body anteriorly, the vertebral arch posteriorly, and a rounded vertebral foramen enclosed by the pedicles and laminae. From the posteromedial midline, the spinous process appears shorter and more horizontal than in the mid thoracic levels, while the transverse processes project laterally from the junction of pedicle and lamina. Superior and inferior articular processes bracket the zygapophyseal (facet) joints, and the costal facets for rib articulation are expected at this level, with T11 typically bearing a single complete facet on each side of the vertebral body and no transverse costal facet. A transitional vertebra. T11 matters because it sits at the thoracolumbar junction where the relatively rigid, rib-stabilised thoracic spine gives way to the more mobile lumbar segments, and that shift changes both load transfer and injury patterns. Wedge compression fractures and burst fractures frequently cluster around T11 to L2 after axial loading, and appreciating the size and orientation of the pedicles and posterior elements helps when planning pedicle screw fixation or interpreting CT in trauma. The rounded canal and shorter spinous process also help differentiate lower thoracic levels during level counting, a common pitfall before epidural placement or spinal surgery. Use this asset in gross anatomy teaching on vertebral regional differences, in orthopaedic and neurosurgical modules on thoracolumbar trauma classification, or in radiology texts illustrating why T11 can be misidentified when only a limited field-of-view is available.
