Description
Over the lateral cranium, the temporalis muscle is rendered beneath the scalp and temporalis fascia, filling the temporal fossa on the squamous part of the temporal bone and extending superiorly onto the parietal bone up to the temporal lines. Its fibers converge inferiorly as a tendon that passes deep to the zygomatic arch to insert on the coronoid process and anterior border of the mandibular ramus, placing the muscle anterosuperior to the external ear region and lateral to the cranial vault. Anteriorly, the frontal bone and nasal bones frame the upper face, while the maxilla and upper dentition sit inferior to the orbit and anterior to the mandibular articulation. The thoracic cage and shoulder girdle appear inferiorly in partial view. A broad anatomical context. Mastication depends on temporalis power and vector, and this lateral craniofacial view makes the muscle’s fan-shaped architecture easy to relate to mandibular elevation and retrusion.
