Description
Running in transverse section, the vein wall is organized into tunica intima (tunica interna), tunica media, and tunica externa (adventitia), each color coded for quick separation of layers. A wide, often slightly irregular lumen sits centrally, bordered by a thin endothelium and subendothelial connective tissue, with the tunica media forming a comparatively slender circumferential smooth muscle band external to it. Valve leaflets project from the intima into the lumen as paired semilunar folds, their free margins directed toward the heart (proximal), while the fibrous adventitia lies most peripheral, blending outward into surrounding connective tissue. Emphasis on the tunica intima and valve architecture makes this a strong teaching view for the low pressure venous system, where wall compliance and leaflet coaptation determine competent unidirectional flow. Valve failure and venous dilation underlie chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins, and the same intimal surface becomes clinically relevant when endothelial injury promotes thrombosis along valve pockets, a common nidus for deep vein thrombosis. Different from an artery, the thin media and expandable lumen explain why veins can appear flattened on histology and why they distend with volume loading. Small details matter here.
