Description
Left lateral orientation of the human heart highlights the coronary circulation as it courses over the epicardial surface, with the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk rising superiorly at the base. From the left coronary artery near the left aortic sinus, the anterior interventricular branch (left anterior descending, LAD) descends inferiorly in the anterior interventricular sulcus toward the apex, while the circumflex artery tracks leftward and posteriorly within the coronary (atrioventricular) sulcus beneath the left auricle. Blue venous channels accompany the arterial paths, including the great cardiac vein paralleling the LAD and curving toward the posterior aspect to contribute to the coronary sinus. A left-sided view gives clean access to the vessels most often targeted in ischemic heart disease, because the LAD and circumflex territories account for a large proportion of clinically significant coronary stenoses. It also matches common procedural anatomy: cardiologists interpret left coronary angiography in projections that emphasize the left main bifurcation, and surgeons plan bypass grafting with attention to the LAD’s anterior course and the circumflex branches wrapping toward the obtuse margin. This is where infarcts happen.
