Presented in dorsal aspect, the male hand and wrist are rendered with the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges aligned in anatomical position, with the distal radius and ulna forming the proximal framework of the radiocarpal region. Superficial dorsal veins course longitudinally along the digits and coalesce over the dorsum of the hand into the dorsal venous network, then track proximally toward the distal forearm. Deeper source vessels for the palmar arches are referenced by their proximal continuity at the wrist, where the radial and ulnar arteries pass toward the palm while dorsal venous channels remain more superficial. Bony landmarks stay readable throughout. Dorsal venous anatomy matters because it is where clinicians often work. Peripheral IV cannulation commonly targets the dorsal metacarpal veins and the cephalic vein along the radial (lateral) border, while avoiding segments that tether over extensor tendons and mobile joints where infiltration and dislodgement are more likely. The relationship between veins and the carpal and metacarpal framework also supports planning for hand surgery and flap design, where preserving venous outflow reduces postoperative congestion.
