Description
Running from the distal leg into the pedal region, the superficial venous network of the dorsum of the foot is rendered in bright blue over a semi-transparent outline of the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges. The dorsal venous arch spans transversely across the metatarsal bases, receiving dorsal metatarsal veins and dorsal digital venules from the toes. Medially, the arch continues proximally as the great saphenous vein anterior to the medial malleolus, while laterally it feeds the small saphenous vein posterior to the lateral malleolus before ascending into the posterior calf. Deeper plantar drainage is implied by perforating channels that pass from superficial dorsal veins toward the venae comitantes accompanying the anterior tibial and posterior tibial arteries. For teaching lower-limb venous return, this transparent, x-ray style presentation clarifies where superficial veins track relative to palpable bony landmarks at the ankle and forefoot. That relationship matters in clinical practice: the great saphenous vein is a common conduit for coronary artery bypass grafting and can be targeted for venous cannulation or cutdown anterior to the medial malleolus, while the small saphenous vein courses near the sural nerve and is relevant during endovenous ablation planning. Mapping the dorsal venous arch also helps explain dependent edema patterns and why varicosities often cluster along superficial channels and their perforators.
