Description
Frontal thoracic anatomy is rendered with a semi-transparent male torso, centering the venous pathways returning to the right atrium. The superior vena cava descends on the right side of the superior mediastinum, receiving the right and left brachiocephalic veins formed by the internal jugular and subclavian veins at the thoracic inlet. Along the right posterolateral mediastinum, the azygos vein ascends and arches anteriorly over the root of the right lung to join the superior vena cava, with intercostal tributaries implied by the blue venous network. Fine venules and superficial thoracic veins track within the anterior chest wall, while lymphatic vessels course in parallel within the same transparent field. This anterior view clarifies relationships that matter in central venous access and mediastinal surgery, where the superior vena cava lies just deep to the manubrium and right first costal cartilage, vulnerable to catheter malposition or iatrogenic injury. The azygos arch is a key landmark on chest x-ray and CT, and it enlarges in azygos continuation or chronic obstruction of the inferior vena cava, creating a prominent right paratracheal or hilar contour that can mimic lymphadenopathy. Venous anatomy also frames the expected pathways of SVC syndrome, where collateral flow often recruits the azygos system and superficial chest wall veins.
